August Meeting Follow-up

To start I’d like to extend a thank you to Sebastian, Zach, Dave, Darryl, Philip, Debbie, Max, Adam, and Derek for making it out to the first RAnDOM meeting. 10 people is a great turn out and made our first meeting a success. I was able to get some code to address the Google Maps parts of the example into the SVN repository before the meeting. If you weren’t able to attend, check out the code for some more examples.

Goombay’s was a good location to start, but we definitely have to meet inside next time (where there is air conditioning). A few people mentioned looking into an alternate locations, so if anyone has any suggestions, please add them as comments to this post. Next month we’re going to have a Flex topic, maybe integrating with the Yahoo Music API, so help us spread the word about RAnDOM. Watch the blog for next month’s topics and we hope to see the same faces next month.

August Meeting Tomorrow

Just as a reminder, our first meeting for the group will be tomorrow night, 08/28, @ 7:00 PM at Goombay’s on A1A. We’ll be covering creating mashups using jQuery and nothing but HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We need to get an accurate count for the restaurant, so if you have an opportunity, please RSVP before the meeting. See you all at the meeting!

First Meeting Rescheduled Due to TS Fay

Well, I’ve held off as long as I could, but I think it’s a safe bet to say that TS Fay is stubborn and doesn’t want to leave Breavard county.  Since we’re meeting beachside, let’s move the meeting back by a week to 08/28/2008.  We’ll keep the same time and place for now, but check this blog for more updates as we get closer to the new meeting date.

On a side note, Sebastian has done a great job of updating the sample app for our first meeting with a cool look and feel.  Also Zach has some great sample data ready for us that will be available soon.  If you’d like to get a jump on the sample code, no better time than during the height of your cabin fever.  :)

See you next Thursday!

In keeping with our name (RAnDOM) I’ve decided to make my first post just that. I designed a desktop wallpaper for all of you RAnDOM enthusiasts.

August Primer - Creating Mashups using the Basics

For our first meeting, we’re not really sure what to expect in terms of attendance or location or even how well cooperative programming will work out, so this time around we’re going to keep it simple. I’ve thrown together a sample app using nothing but HTML, CSS, and Javascript so we can all work together to create your typical AJAX mash-up application; no server scripting need. We’ll be using everyone’s favorite Javascript library, jQuery, as well as the jMaps and jgCharts plug-ins for jQuery to make creating the mash-up that much easier.

To participate in the meeting, we suggest bringing along the following:

That being said, if you don’t have these few things and just want to swing by, get a bite to eat, and see what we’re all about, everyone’s welcome. My shoulder is definitely available for looking over.

I’ve created the event on Eventbrite, our calendaring and event tool, so if you are able to make it, please leave us an RSVP so we can let the restaurant know how many to expect. Code should be made available withing a few days, if anyone wants to start messing around with it. Also, if you feel the urge, help us spread the word about our organization and meetings. Every little bit helps, especially since right now it’s just 3 guys who like to code trying to put this together.

Hope to see you all at our first meeting!

Welcome to RAnDOM

Well, after a few months of on and off again planning, and with the help of some very helpful colleagues, we’ve put together RAnDOM, the Rich ApplicatioN Developers Of Melbourne.  Although our name says Melbourne, our meetings are going to be open to all developers and enthusiasts of Brevard County as well as anyone in Central Florida who wants to join us.  Initially our resources will be limited and our goals will be small, but over time, hopefully we can make our mark on the Space Coast.

With that out of the way, we’ve finally picked out our meeting location, time, and date.  Check out our Meetings page for more information.  We hope to have more resources available soon including event calendaring, meeting rsvp, discussion groups, etc.  This weekend we should have a new look and feel for the blog on the way as well.  I also hope to have a primer up for the first meeting soon, so everyone can see what we’re going to attempt for our first meeting.

Welcome to RAnDOM.  See you at the first meeting!
